Academic and non-academic staff of Adamawa State-owned tertiary institutions have declared an indefinite strike over their exclusion from the new minimum wage increase.
The strike, announced by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of academic and non-academic staff unions, follows the expiration of a seven-day warning strike that began on February 27, 2025, and ended on March 10, 2025.
In a communiqué signed by JAC Chairperson, Comrade Maryam Abdullahi, the unions directed all members to withdraw from their duties starting Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
“JAC is directing all its members to embark on an indefinite strike action starting from 11th March 2025 until further notice. Members are to ensure full compliance with this directive,” the statement read.
The unions argue that their exclusion from the minimum wage increase is unjust and have vowed to remain on strike until their demands are met. The action is expected to paralyze academic activities across Adamawa State’s tertiary institutions, leaving thousands of students stranded.
The Guardian recalls that Governor Ahmadu Umar Fintiri was the first to declare the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage in the country.
A few months later, the National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Audu Amba, chided the governor for excluding teachers from the minimum wage implementation.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from government officials were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
