Tory Lanez’s new album, “PETERSON,” recorded entirely from prison, reveals details about his incarceration and legal battles. Notably, he expresses deep gratitude towards Chris Brown for providing crucial financial support when other industry figures did not.
On the tracks “T.D.F x LA County Jail (feat. DSTNY)” and “Free Tory,” Lanez highlights Brown’s generosity. He raps about facing financial hardship while incarcerated and how Brown stepped up, offering financial assistance when Lanez’s other “rap friends” and “celebrity friends” were absent. Lanez specifically mentions needing funds for his appeal and struggling to access his own money. He portrays Brown’s act as a genuine display of brotherhood, emphasizing that Brown offered the money without expecting anything in return.
Beyond expressing his appreciation for Chris Brown, Lanez uses the album to address his legal situation and his former lawyer, Shawn Holley. In “Verdict Day x Layer Fees Interlude,” he criticizes Holley’s handling of his case, alleging she didn’t provide adequate representation and was “in bed with the opposition.” He claims she discouraged DNA testing, misrepresented evidence, and pressured him to accept plea deals. Lanez also suggests Holley had a conflict of interest, implying she was working with Roc Nation, Megan Thee Stallion’s management. He includes a voicemail from Holley where she demands $900,000 for her fees, presenting it as a non-negotiable ultimatum.
