Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has fired back at Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic ahead of their crunch Europa League meeting.
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic have been in the news ahead of Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final between both teams.
Onana recently claimed that United are a better team than Lyon, saying;
“I think we are better than them, we just have to go there and show who we are. If we go there with a winning mentality and follow the game plan, we will be winning the game…Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them,”
Matic, a two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea, who played for United from 2017 to 2022, responded by calling Onana one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history.
“If you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, then you need to take care of what you’re talking about,” Matic said during a pre-match news conference.

Matic questioned the legitimacy of Onana’s statement, suggesting that only legendary goalkeepers like Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar could make such claims.
“If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar said that, I would question myself. But if you’re statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history, he needs to show that before he says it.”
Onana seemed to take notice of Matic’s comments and responded with a veiled attack on Matic’s trophyless career at United.
In a post on social media platform X, Onana wrote;
“I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent.
We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same,” the post read.
This has surely fired up the meeting between both sides, as United look to salvage a disappointing season.
